One of my favorite stories from my mother’s childhood is how she and her brother would “play funeral.” Living across the street from a church, my uncle would watch funeral processions from the window of their railroad apartment and then reenact them. He knew from the age of nine that he wanted to be a funeral director!
My mom passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2008. To honor her memory on the 10th anniversary of her passing, I created an art piece that recreated a moment from her childhood. My uncle became a funeral director and owns a funeral home in Queens, NY.
